The Reunionese singer has stayed the course she set when she started out: giving Creole the trappings of a universal language to assert her musical expression and carry her commitments high.
Fiery and tenacious are the first words that come to mind when listening to Maya Kamaty's limpid, inhabited voice.
In 2014, she set the scene for her new album, a bridge between the Maloya of her beloved island and modern pop, between the desire to let her roots take root and bathe them in contemporary sounds. Her first album, Santié Papang (2014), was a success, being named "Coup de cœur" by the Académie Charles Cros. With it, she toured the globe: from India to Australia via Morocco, South Africa, Canada, South Korea and China.
Maya then decided to move away from the acoustic folk of her first album and develop her music further. The result was Pandiyé, released in 2018. With the help of producer Victor Vagh (Flavia Coelho), Maya and her band found the right balance between organic and electronic.
With the album Sovaz, released in February 2024, Maya's music took a distinctly urban turn. She goes off on a tangent, doesn't smooth things over, composes syncopated music, sings lyrics of deep rage that she expels in a breath that is typical of the urgency of the street. Sovaz evokes a raw, unpolished, even insolent side to her, a transgressive attitude to life.
